<video:title>Closed Guard using 2 on 1 Grip: X-Guard to Leg Drag Sweep - Gi</video:title>
      <video:description>

Closed Guard using 2 on 1 Grip: X-Guard to Leg Drag Sweep - Gi

Master the Closed Guard to Leg Drag transition with this high-level BJJ technique! This 10 second Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu video demonstrates a brilliant attacking sequence from coach Jason Hall, focusing on controlling the opponent's posture and seamlessly transitioning between multiple advanced guards. It helps develop precise grip control and smooth hip movement, making it ideal for intermediate to advanced practitioners. This setup is a high-percentage sweep that leads directly into a dominating guard pass, ensuring you score two points for the sweep and three points for the pass in competition.

The full chain is an attacking BJJ transition drill designed to negate strong posture by manipulating the opponent's arms and isolating a leg.

How and When to Practice

Struggling with opponents pressuring from the standing guard or closed guard? This drill helps you counter strong posture. Practice this movement to solve the specific problem of opponents refusing to engage in your closed guard. The key is controlling the sleeve grip and off balancing your partner with dynamic leg movement (X-Guard). Use this technique 2-3 times per week to build the muscle memory required for a fast, surprise attack. This technique works effectively for all body types because it relies heavily on leverage and grip control rather than sheer strength. It is ideal against bigger and heavier opponents, specially when you get under them which gets them off balanced.

Steps: The Closed Guard to Leg Drag Sequence

1. Establish the 2-on-1 Sleeve and Elbow Control

Starting in Closed Guard, secure the arm-isolating 2-on-1 grip:

Use your cross-sleeve grip (e.g., left hand on the opponent's left sleeve).

The same-side hand (right hand) grips behind the opponent's left elbow.

This combination breaks the opponent's posture and isolates their arm.

2. Transition to Key Master (Advanced X-Guard Entry)

Open the Closed Guard and place your 2-on-1 grip side foot (right foot), on the hip to maintain distance.

The left leg is placed on the opponent's bicep.

Release the elbow grip (right hand) and grab the opponent's same side ankle (left ankle). Move your hips away then again under the right leg, to get to the Key Master Position, a powerful transition to get under the hips.

3. The X-Guard Sweep and Leg Drag Entry

Use your X-Guard hooks to lighten the opponent's front leg (the one you are controlling with your hands).

Execute the sweep by pushing your opponent back, with your legs and off balancing the opponent.

As the opponent falls, drag the isolated leg over your body and immediately transition to a dominant top position.

4. Finish in Leg Drag Pass

You will land directly in the Leg Drag Guard Pass position, which instantly removes the opponent's ability to recover guard.

Maintain a strong cross-face and hip pressure to secure the Side Control pass.

How to Drill It

Start with Step 1 and 2. After a few minutes, add Step 3-4. Ideally you would do this for 5 minutes. Stick to one side and move on to the other once you get comfortable.

When to Use

Use this technique when your opponent is standing up to pass your Closed Guard or when they are trying to pressure you from a standing position. This sequence is the perfect counter for the modern standing pass, forcing them to address your lower body attack and leading to a high-percentage sweep.

Why It Works

This sequence works because it is a multi-layered attack. It first uses the 2-on-1 grip to control the upper body, which prevents posture. It then uses the Key Master entry to transition into the X-Guard position. The combination of pushing with your legs and pulling with your grips makes this sweep very powerful against a standing passer, as you their break posture and base.

Common Mistakes

Releasing the 2-on-1 Grip Too Early: Wait for the opponent to stop resisting. Eventually you can do these transitions very quickly and it won't matter how are the opponent is trying to escape.

Not Hipping Out: Failing to create the angle to get behind the knee for the Key Master.

Losing foot on the bicep: Probably the most important grip in this sweep. Do not allow lose the foot on the bicep until you are in Key Master position.

Related Techniques & Chains

Chain: Mix it up with these options, 2 on 1 grip to Armbar, 2 on 1 grip to Triangle.

FAQ

What is the most important detail for the 2-on-1 Closed Guard sequence?

The most important detail is the moment you transition from closed guard to an open one with your 2 on 1 grip. The whole thing will fall apart if the foot on the bicep is lost.

Difficulty

Advanced

In Action

Lots of videos from John Danaher, Clark Gracie and Rafael Lovato Jr. Try it on your opponent, they'll hate you for it!

      <video:title>Closed Guard using 2 on 1 Grip: Arm Bar - Gi</video:title>
      <video:description>

Dominate your opponents with this devastating 2-on-1 Armbar from Closed Guard! This short Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu video demonstrates a highly efficient submission taught by coach Jason Hall. This technique is centered on superior upper body control and leverage to execute a fast, high-percentage armbar submission. It helps develop precise breaking of posture, making it an essential submission for intermediate practitioners. This setup is a potent attack that can often be finished without the need for a major hip angle, increasing your submission rate.

This attack is a core BJJ submission drill designed to break your opponent's strong posture by locking down one arm and creating powerful leg frames.

How and When to Practice

Are you looking to improve your submission timing from the guard? This drill helps you counter the common defense of your opponent trying to posture up. Practice this movement to master the submission on an opponent whose arm is isolated. The key is to establish a deep cross-sleeve grip and control the shoulder with your leg. Use this technique 3–4 times per week to build the confidence required to attack the arm whenever the opportunity arises. This submission is effective for all body types, as the isolation and leg pressure provide all the necessary leverage, making it ideal for smaller players against larger opponents.

Steps: The 2-on-1 Armbar Sequence

1. Establish the Dominant 2-on-1 Control

Start in Closed Guard and secure the arm-isolating grip. Get a strong cross-sleeve grip (e.g., left hand on the opponent's right sleeve). Follow immediately with your other hand (right hand) to grip behind the opponent's left elbow. This 2-on-1 control is key for posture destruction.

2. Leg Isolation and Framing

Once the arm is trapped, open your Closed Guard safely.

Place the foot opposite your 2-on-1 grip (left foot) high on the opponent's right bicep to establish a powerful frame and maintain distance.

The same-side leg (right leg) will then swing opponents hips, maintaining distance.

3. Finalizing the Armbar

Your left leg (on the shoulder) creates a barrier, while your right foot (on the neck) isolates the head.

While maintaining the strong elbow control with your right hand, extend your hips and apply pressure to the arm.

The unique combination of the leg frame and the 2-on-1 grip allows you to straighten the arm for the armbar even when staying relatively square with your opponent.

How to Drill It

Drill this sequence in rounds of 45 seconds per side and focus on smooth, continuous movement. Start from the grip and transition all the way to the final hip extension. Focus on maintaining the leg control and tight hip connection at the point of submission.

Reps: 45 seconds per side

Focus: Maintaining elbow control and smooth hip-pivot for the finish.

When to Use

Use this high-percentage submission when your opponent is attempting to posture up or separate their hands in your closed guard. It's an excellent attack after successfully breaking their posture but before they stand up fully, forcing them to tap or enter a defensive scramble.

Why It Works

This technique works because it creates a double layer of isolation. First, the 2-on-1 grip isolates the arm from the body. Second, the shoulder/neck frames created by your legs lock the opponent's head and shoulder away from their isolated arm. This simultaneous isolation and leverage allows you to finish the straight armbar with minimal need for a hip-escape angle.

Common Mistakes

Opening Guard Too Soon: Do not open your guard until the 2-on-1 control is completely secure and the opponent's posture is broken.

Losing the Foot on the Bicep: If the foot on the bicep slips, the opponent can often use that space to pass your guard.

Lack of Hip Extension: Failure to extend the hips fully will prevent the final joint lock, allowing the opponent time to defend.

Related Techniques & Chains

Chain: Try to through these options to keep them guessing 2 on 1 grip to Leg Drag Sweep, 2 on 1 grip to Triangle.

FAQ

What is the most important detail for this 2-on-1 Armbar?

The most important detail is the simultaneous control you gain from the foot on the bicep and to keep your hand above the opponents elbow.

Difficulty

Intermediate | Advanced

In Action

Look at athletes like Roger Gracie and Clark Gracie who are famous for their high-percentage, fundamental Closed Guard submissions. The isolation and control principles in this move are core to their success. Try this move in your next sparring session, especially against someone who constantly tries to open your guard!

</video:description>

      <video:title>2 on 1 Triangle</video:title>
<video:description>Jason Hall shows off a very affective technique from closed guard, its the arm bar using the 2 on 1. With a closed guard, you get your cross grip followed by your hand on your partners elbow. At this point, it is safe to open up your closed guard and move into the open guard. With your left leg, you will keep this on your opponents shoulder so that you can keep some distance between you. Your other leg will move into a lasso position, but you will keep pushing it forward so that your feet is across your partners neck. Now you can extend your hips, while hold his elbow, straighten his arm for the armbar.

The amazing part about this technique is that you don't have to get a crazy angle to finish the armbar, it can pretty much be done while being square with your opponent.</video:description>

<video:description>Marcelo shows an amazing collar drag while your opponent is on his knees. Once you pull your opponent down, you can move your top hand over the guys head and finish the cross choke.</video:description>

<video:description>Marcelo demonstrates a really cool variation of the Kimura from closed guard. Once you have the Kimura locked in, if your opponent grabs is own gi as a defense, grab his collar to lock in the Kimura. From here, switch to the open guard and put your legs over your partners back to finish the bicep slicer. </video:description>

      <video:title>Cross Choke From Turtle Guard</video:title>
<video:description>This BJJ Technique shows us how to do a cross choke when you have your opponent in the turtle position. Marcelo Saporito starts off with controlling his partner on the top turtle position. He sneaks one of his hands under the armpit and grabs a collar. From here, with his other free hand, Marcelo finishes the choke while getting under his opponent into the guard position. If you get stuck here, you can always sweep your partner into side control and still finish the cross choke.</video:description>

<video:description>I want to thank Jacob The Bull Brown for this amazing technique. The blue belt from Mendes Bros AOJ club shows us how to pass the De La Riva guard with your opponent having his standard collar grip. Once Jacob removes the DLR and collar grip, he quickly goes to the reverse DLR then transitions to a slick leg weave. With a windshield wiper to side control Jacob makes his opponent tap with a collar baseball bat choke.</video:description>

<video:description>Cobrinha BJJ brown belt Steve Camara shows us what he's been drilling lately. There is so much going on here, but this is exactly the type of craziness that Steve specializes in. The man from Beamsville Ontario starts from bottom guard with a cross sleeve. He goes in to a deep De La Riva then uses the new Jon Thomas Vice guard to control his opponent. From there, Steve brings his knees to his chest, brings his opponent over his shoulder into the bolo position, which of course leads to a back take. Yes that is a lot of technique, so go practice and drill!</video:description>

<video:title>Guard Retention for Defending the Knee Slide</video:title>
<video:description>Dan Hale starts from the De La Riva position with one hand holding his opponents ankle and the other one doing a cross collar grip. Once his opponent starts to put his foot between his legs with the intention to go for a knee slide, Dan uses his inside leg to throw his opponent over his shoulder. With some fancy leg work, he gets his leg free and goes back into his DLR position. While his opponent comes back from basing on his hand, this is actually a great time to continue using his opponent into a sweep or the bolo position.</video:description>

<video:title>De La Riva Sweep Using The Honey Hole</video:title>
<video:description>First, I'll admit, I haven't played enough with the Honey Hole technique, but I know someone that is really good at it and its been frustrating getting caught in it. I highly suggest trying it out.

In this Jiu Jitsu we have Dan Hale from Cobrinha BJJ showing off the Honey Hole from De La Riva. This position in can be used as a sweep or you can go for a submission using leg locks! While being in the DLR position and defending the knee slide, Dan holds on to his opponents collar and brings him over his hip. From there, he traps his opponents opposite leg with the honey hole. Instead of going for a leg lock, this time he uses it as a sweep, comes up on top and into side control with his underhook.

This popular position has been inspired by John Danaher who has taught his students Gordon Ryan, Nicky Ryan & Garry Tonon this amazing move.</video:description>
